Encountered snow on my way home tonight - quite thick for a while but not lying on the road. Did meet a snowplough doing his thing but it was a bit unnecessary.

Boot weight is a good tip ta Pete. Luckily I work only 2 miles away so have even walked in.

As you're a softie southerner like me (unklike the OP, who is so far north of Watford I'd get a nosebleed!) the chances of problematic white stufff are low. However, following my experience the first winter I had the S203 (and brand new Falken FK452 tyres!) I have a second set of wheels with winter tyres, put them on about end November until end March. If and when white stuff is around, it means I'm mobile instead of immobile - but mainly it's wet weather, and winters are better on wet roads than summer tyres.

The big lesson I learnt was shop on eBay for winter wheels, know EXACTLY the rim specs you need, and be patient. The set for my S203 cost £800 from MB (16" rims), the set I now have for the S204 cost 1/4 of that, are genuine MB and rims and tyres were in "as new" condition!

E320cdi was pathetic, even the boot lid is aluminium to keep the weight down so no weight at all over the back end.

The recommendation of putting a couple of sacks of cement in the boot didn't do much to be honest.

I tried snow "socks" which were a waste of time, you have to take them off once the road clears of snow, then back on when snow reappears etc etc...

So really at this time of year you should have already switched to 4 winter tyres....and yes winter tyres not snow tyres.

Winter tyres become more effective from approximately 7 degrees C due to the composition of the rubber. They are not just for snow but are much more effective in ice conditions also.

I would recommend Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme.

My 210 Bambi doesn't like snow just the smallest dusting and its flailing around.
So last year got some winter tyres and not even seen a frost yet,
so I have no idea.
