same as above 17" will fit & possibly 16". you want the narrowest tyre possible for maximum down weight.
Also saves you a fortune in tyre costs.
All the German E class taxis are on 16" winter tyres.

Thanks. But i dont want extra rims.

Err....just to clear that up, I ran a full set of winters not just on the rear

The full staggered set is the same as my summer Contis, so the rears are those the OP mentioned

And for the record, they work well and even in snow, the big fat rears (and fronts) did their job well.
Getting rid of the full set as I am not going up north for work through the winter now and down here I will take my chances / work from home (unless I fall across a decent set of 18 inch alloys, but that's not happening.....o_O)

no its not, the mb owners book states i can fit a winter tyre of 225 40 18 . no need to change the rims. i was just concerned that putting a 225 tyre onto a 8.5j rim as the handbook only states 8j rim .

And just to comment on this, checked several places (Inc tyre fitters MB dealer, MB CS and even Hankook, and putting 225/40/18 winters on the rims I have on the front that have 235/40/18 is fine. Under sized by a ratio of 10 is fine. Speedo slightly out, but then the car Speedos are out anyway compared to GPS as we all know

I was going to fit 225 and 245 cross climates but someone mentioned my insurer may not payout. Unfortunately they dont do crossclimates in a 255 size.

You can get other (good) All Seasons in 255/35/18 for the rear though, as I msy look a full set out when my summers need a change.

Whats the general opinion of having all season on the rears and summers on the front. Givin that all season is neither summer nor a winter tyre. Im pretty sure the die hards will say no. But ill ask anyways.

I'm pretty sure all major tyre companies say no.

Sorry i dont see any relevance to my question. I didnt mention winter tyres.

What is the reason for fitting all seasons though? You will have some compromise in the summer and winter rather than at least some benefit in the winter if you fit them all round.

Of course it’s up to you and I guess legally you would be fine as the recommendation is to keep the same tyres per axle.

2 rears are about shot and dont wanna have to buy 4 winters now and then have to buy 2 new summers later and pay again to have fronts swapped.

After deliberating ive decided on all out winters . Nothing too fancy price wise . All 4 corners for £201.
