:?: I am a new owner of a 220 cdi estate and would like to fit a set of winter tyres for the next few "cold" months. Does anybody have any experience / knowledge as to what type / make I should fit? I will fit them onto some spare wheels and just change the whole set. :?:

It is very common in the hillier parts of Southern Germany to fit a different set of tyres for winter, or "Winterreifen" as they are called. There may well be a German MB discussion group or club who could speak from experience - I would suggest http://www.mbig.de/ as the biggest officially recognised one. Post your question in English on their forum, and you'll almost certainly get some useful ideas! Don't worry about language if you don't speak German. Most Germans speak great English and enjoy practising...

Hi,
goodyear Vectors may still be available. They are made of a compound that stays soft in extreme cold. I suggest giving your local Goodyear supplier a ring.

There aren't many manufacturers who market winter tyres in England. One that does is Vredestein and they're a pretty good make and quite cheap.

Hi manortoft
I'm not sure where your based, but here's my 2p's worth
I thought I'd share my winter tyre experiences, I'm based in Southern Ireland, and have been buying tyres off the Internet for the past couple of years. If you try this website www.mytyres.co.uk , and based on your country, they sell all over Europe.
I use a version for Ireland, but you can use the UK link, What I find really good is, you can search for & buy Winter or Summer or all year round tyres, based on your tye sizes, not only that, and more importantly, you can read tyre tests before buying so you know how good the tyre is, on my 86 300 Diesel, I've been using a Winter tyre from Goodyear, the Ultra grip 6,195/65/15 to be exact, as I do 35\40K miles a year & most of the year can be wet, I bought these tyres soley based on the tests & I have nothing but ultimate praise for these tyres & the test I read was spot on, I've never had any problems buying tyres over the net, coupled with the fact there much cheaper. As for fitting, just book it in to your local dealer, as I've never had a problem with a tyre shop fitting/balancing tyres that were not purchased there, it's still money to them at the end of the day. And even if you do not buy over the net, the tyre test facility is, in my opinion & based on my Goodyear tyres, invaluable. Incidentally, if you do order over the net, they deliver to whatever address you give them, and delivery is usually 3 to 5 working days, and I can vouch for on time deliveries, never failed yet. And no, I'm not in anyway connected to the company, came across them acidentally on the Net a few years ago.

It's up to you. Hope that sheds some light, let me know how you get on
