Help someone,
The indicator/wiper stalk on my C180 started smoking a wee bit, became quite hot and seized in the on II position. The Wipers have stopped working although indicators work fine. I can get the wipers to go if I push the stalk in,ie to wash windscreen, although washer jets don't just the wiper.

I am quite sure that the only problem is the stalk's wiper switch, and was wondering if anyone had any experience at replacing this. I have bought a Haynes manual and would like to try the replacement myself.

My biggest fear is dealing with the airbag. 1st question, anyone know what size Torx screwdriver is need to unscrew airbag from steering wheel, seen these in size T10, T15 and T20 so far.

Second question, and probably the most important is SAFETY. With the car's battery removed and as far away as poss from the car !! could the airbag still inflate. Are there any other precautions that should be taken when dealing with an airbag.

Maybe I'm just being dramatic....

Help any one please !!!!

Thanks

Andrew Chalk. p.s. changed the auto gearbox oil and filter the other week at 144,000 miles. Marked improvement in gear changes. Thanks to the person who write the article on doing the same on a E class Merc, was a big help.

Andrew, have done this job and so long as you follow the procedure laid out in the Haynes manual you should have no worries about the airbag; disconnect the battery and wait 15 mins before starting work ,ensure there is no-one in the car when reconnecting the battery after completing the work.

Andrew, not sure if you've done this yet but, when you've disconnected the battery, touch the terminals toghether and discharge any built up voltage in the capasitors, if we get called out to a crash, this is one of the things we do to make a car safe.
my wipers have done exactly the same last night, so, was it straight forward easy job after all ?
