i have dismantled my wiper mech . as it did not want to move today.
i have found that it is a 'ball and socket' joint where the rotor arm of the motor joins the pushing mechanisim. any ideas about the cheapest way of repairing this?
thanks

I’m assuming this is the single wiper, I presume you are referring to the cup that the ball sits in, see post # 12… http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=35032&page=2 … if the cup is worn away and the ball will no longer stay in place, then the only solution is to get another pushing mechanism part from scrap yard however it will probably be just as expensive as a complete mechanism.

The cup part seems to have been molded into the arm, I dare say it could be forced out but finding something similar, that would fit exactly would be a big problem.

Hopefully someone may have a solution but I can’t see how it can be repaired.

Ps, I just read Jibs comment, and would be surprised if a particular part for the wiper mechanism could be got from a dealer, but if he is right then that would be the best solution.

No for the mech thats broken or worn out thats the price, I have in tha past replaced the ball and cup with nut and bolt machined to a set width so it fits and doesnt catch but it was a weekend and desperate.

Give me the first 6 of your vin and I will give you the part number and a price.

Your last post indicates that you are not sure if the socket part is worn, if the socket can be detached from the ball with very little effort then it may be worn to such an extent that it is becoming detached during wiper use.

However if it is a tight fit and difficult to detach, then it may be ok and your problem may be just that the mechanism needs lubrication.

DEC..that is exactly what is happening...ie the 'ball ans socket' are so loose that it is becoming detached on use..the rest of the parts are working fine...

When the ball and socket are in good condition the need a good whack with the heel of your shoe in order to reunite the two parts but if you are satisfied that the are worn then you will need to replace the arm that has the socket on, the ball part will be ok as it is hard metal. Its failure would have been down to its lack of lubrication.

I have heard that idea about fixing with a nut and bolt but as Jib has said its only a temporary fix and I doubt it would last.

I think its of to the scrappy or the dealer.
