Hello Everyone,
I have a problem with the wipers on my 2004 e320. The wiper on the passenger side is making a very annoying sound when in use. I read the posts and cleaned the windscreen and the wipers thoroughly and the noise stopped for about 5 minutes and then back again. It looks like the bottom of the wiper is juddering. I have checked both wiper blades and they look brand new. What could be the problem? The last few days it has been raining and with more rain to come i cant stand the noise. Thanks for your comments.

You have to make sure that the blade sits at 90 degrees to the glass, you do this by twisting the the wiper arm

Speedy response, Will check this in the morning. If that is fine what else could be the problem. Should i try changing the wipers?

This is what MB say, you should wipe the blades first with a spirit to make sure that there is no grease or contamination on the blades first

I used holts screenies and cleaned the wipers until there was no grime coming off and also used autoglym glass polish.

To get glass back to its "virgin" condition wipe with methalated spirts using a lint free cloth. As far as I know this is the only way to remove ALL surface contaminants off glass.

Is the noise mechanical one? Try to use wipers standalone. If continues to go the way it used to, then the problem is with the windscreen. I would wash without any chemicals. Try only water...

I just purchased the car about a week ago and everything was fine. I cant be sure how old the blades are but the car has done only 25000 miles. The noise does not sound mechanical. I can see where the wiper judders as it leaves a trail. I will try the suggested tips and give you an update.

Try a set of new blades. They tend not to be changed that often as they are expensive.

I have always found the best cure is methylated spirits to clean the screen. Lots of it. Rally driver gave me this tip. He said he thought the problem is a thin film of diesel from fumes that causes the noise. Wash the blades too. If that fails new blades often work wonders.

My own experience is that NEAT Fairy Liquid works well when rubbed on with a cotton cloth.

use meths for blades and when cleaning windscreen use newspaper instead of screenies or rags,if the cars done 25,000 miles and been serviced by MB,the blades will probably have been changed as part of the service whether needed or not, maybe even twice.according to MB it is part of service requirements,as their around 60-70 pounds its a nice little earner on a service.I now refuse to pay for them unless i ask for them to be changed.

Sounds as though someone has possibly over sprayed polish onto the windscreen? Was it valeted before you bought it?

Have checked the angle of the blades and they are fine. Took the blades off to examine if there is anything tearing away. But as Euclidb2 said, the service was just done on the car before i purchased it and the blades look brand new. I have another set of wipers coming in tomorrow which i paid £30 for and are the same as the ones from mercedes so will try those out but before i open them will give the windscreen and blades a good clean with meths. Thanks for all your suggestions. Will post back tomorrow with an update.

Update: Received the new wipers this morning but before i fitted them on i decided to check once more if the noise was still coming from the current wipers. To my surprise there was no noise. Drove around in the rain for a while and then tried the wipers a few times on dry windscreen and then wet and no noise. Cant think what the problem could have been. Have a set of new wipers now so if it does come back will do a quick swap and see what happens.
