I agree with JBERKS, probably the switch.
Its probably a build up of old grease and dirt inside. Its quite easy to get in to clean it. The end cap of the stalk comes off with a bit of persuasion, a blunt knife pushed into the gap works. As it comes off, watch for the spring. You wont lose it as its quite big. To clean, a squirt with any switch cleaner, Electrolube if possible. Maplin can supply. I suppose you could use WD40, but I hate the smell of it and I dont think it is really suitable for small electrical contacts.
