Wiper with mind of its own?

The other evening whilst driving home from work, the wiper on my CLK just started running on its own accord. Ever since, every time I turn on the ignition, the wiper starts up again. Sometimes this is just one sweep, but other times I cannot seem to get it to stop. I have just been on the motorway and the same thing has just happened again, I was looking a little silly as there was no rain.

Any ideas??

Do you have a rain sensor? Is the wipe switch set to #1? The single wipe at switch on is normal. Sometimes a dirty screen can confuse it inti thinking there's rain

Hi

Yes I do have a rain sensor and the wipe switch on the stalk is in the off position. I presume that this is the #0 position? I have never seen the wiper do a sweep when the ignition is turned on before either? Thanks for your reply, I will keep an eye on it.

Cheers

If the switch is in the #0 position then nothing should happen at all at any time!

Yes I thought so. Looks like I have a problem then. Any other ideas would be welcome.

Off the top of my head I would say the the stalk that gives 90% of these problems might clean up with a spray of switch cleaner

yeah, you should be able to pop the head off it gently (be careful as the spring will fly out) then clean it and spray some aforementioned spray inside, and then re-assemble

The switch part is in the bottom, often steering wheel off
