Sounds like either a bad earth or the wiper motor itself would check the wires at the motor.

I had this once on a ford fester. When i investigated i found a wire had come loose on the motor. I clipped it back on and all was well again. (well, apart from the fact that i was still driving a ****** ford fester!!!!)

If they stop in the same (wrong) position all the time, it may be that the mechanism needs adjusting. Inside the car where the Mech joins to the motor, there's a nut. Turn the wipers off as normal, then loosen the nut an push the wipers in the park position, then tighten the nut again.

This is what happened to my fintail, no reason to think that this wouldn't work on an old 123
