Wonky mirror

The offside door mirror on my 02 SLK moves from side to side but not up and down. I removed the glass, to find that the drive for the up and down movement which fits into the back of the circular mounting plate that the mirror is attached to has come out of its socket in the plate, so that although it is operating when I press the adjuster switch, it's not actually moving the plate. I've tried to re-install it, but with no success. Has anybody done this successfully?

If the little gear wheel has come out they can be pushed back in,,they are only a push fit
