Not sure where to post this but here i go...

Went to start my 2004 CLK 270cdi as normal it started then died instantly. it turns over when i try re start it but dont fire up at all.

Tried sticking my cheap U480 diagnostic tool to it but didnt find any faults. Tried topping fuel up just incase still wont start.

The only thing i changed on the car since i used it is i fitted XENON flicker cancel kits to it yday the kits are connected to the battery. However i did drive the car after fitting them for about 35 mins then parked it up.

LONG SHOT but any ideas?

I would start by checking to see if you can see any air bubbles or fuel moving through the clear lines to and from the filter and high pressure pump.

I cant remember if you have a delivery pump in the tank or a low pressure pump on the engine. Could have a delivery pump failure.

Try a injector leak-off lest.

I suspect the light kit is just coincidence but if easy to disconnect and try mabe worth a go!

good luck

Couldnt see any clear lines mate.

Today i went out to the car tried started it turnt the key let it go, was turning over then stopped. Tried again and again same thing happened. So i turnt the key and HELD it there after roughly 10 to 20 seconds pumping on the pedal and it started up. Now it starts first time every time.

Any ideas what this could be?
Fuel pump?
crank sensor?
or??

Sounds like air in the system still, see if it starts after leaving over night.

on the fuel pipes either end, O rings is what they call them, MB sell the complete set for a few quid.

Just looked and it seems im gettin a leak from these pipes or the gasket above the pipes.. I cant point where exactly though. Anyone else had the same prob or recommend what to change/check? The star bolt above the pipes was loose and i tightend it a good 2 turns till it tightend. Was it suppose to be that loose?

Leaky pipes

Hi j4,

Trying to replace just the O rings alone probably wouldnt work. The pipes get brittle and crack when you disturb them. Merc sell complete, made up pipes. I think you need about 5, total cost about £80. There a bit fiddly to fit but your local ind repairer should have done a few by now and know whats involved. If you only replace one or two rings its sure to let you down as the weather gets colder.

Your kidding me £80 for those tiny pipes? Do you think it is the pipes though? i mean it looks as tho the diesel is coming from the gasket?

fuel leaks

Hi j4,

There isnt a gasket as such. when you undo the male torx bolt, the plastic flange has a short pipe attached to it with an O ring in groove. What i found was that the o ring had gone hard and no longer sealed, letting air in. Do I think the problem is with the pipes themselves ?, probably not, but youre sure to damage them as you wrestle new o rings onto the ends. A 2004 car is probably due them, I replaced them 2 yrs ago on my 2002 C270cdi and they were slightly brittle and yellow. Anyway, what price a car that starts every morning without fail !.

Im with you. So theres O rings behind the male star bolt? If i undu the bolt will it not let so much air in? My car has gone from taking 5 seconds to start to now 2 minutes. Gonna do the starter in and i guess isnt worth it over O rings or even £80 pipes!

For future reference..

I changed all the fuel lines in the engine bay (part from 1) it cost £39 which i thought was reasonable. They came with a different locking clip on the end as the main dealer told me the ones i have are known to perish and break easy. All running fine now so it seems.
