The wood trim on the center console of my 1997 SL 500 has hairline scratches caused by my small dogs. What clear coat material is compatible with the original finish? Should I use a finish intended for wood or something like an exterior auto clear-coat?

Had something similar on a past BMW. I used very fine wet & dry in a wet state of application. then used car scratch remover paste followed by a good waxing and could not tell it had been done. Suggest you try it first on an area thats not too visible.
Best of luck

Thanks, penny and television. I tried compound alone, and it did not clear the scratches. I will try the wetsand ,compound combo next, and if refinish is required, will search for plastic-based clear coat.
