Hi All and happy new year from sunny Almeria

i bought an old 1987 124 250td est 5 cyl deisel non turbo a few months ago to tinker around with.

it had all sorts of horible noises from the 300k motor ,so i have changed the water pump, oiled the front pulley idler and now it sounds pretty sweet apart from a slight "tappet rattle" wich goes off after 25000rpm.

jut wondered if thairs any thing i can do to sort it,without open head  surgery ie could it be a blocked oil way on an hydraulic tappet.?
and or will it still run forever if i just run around at 60mph for the next 200k

thanks
Steve :)

Are you sure the noise is not the timing chain

Hi Malcolm
it could well be the chain,it ist bad, just bad enough to bug you if your an old fitter, that likes quite motors :).

could it be standard timing chain tickover rattle, that will run for ever,as long as the car is driven normally,or should i change the chain ?.

thanks

Steve :)

The 250d & 300d 1985 to 1992 none turbo engines had a tendency until they reached normal engine temperature to tap after 70,000mls from the cam followers getting spongy, but you should not worry as long as the engine oil has been changed regulary should be good for 4or500,000mls, that is if it is followers and not chain or pulley idler. Hope this helps

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
My 250D also suffers this, it has done so since I aquired it 70k ago. I believe its a cam follower/tapet at fault as has already been sugested.

It always clatters when cold and reving it a little helps it disapear.

If I use normal 15/40 oil it does more of it, if I use semisynthetic 10/40 the symptoms are markedly reduced. The rattle gets worse as the oil reaches its lifetime, so change the oil and its back to a quieter life, at about 6000 miles.

Hi

At the start of the video i am almost positive that it is hydraulic tappets, it does seem to quieten down near the end though.
I had the same problem (although constant) on a 603 in a 124 and tried first off changing 2 tappets but it made no difference, after buying all 12 she was and still is like a mouse chewing paper. I changed them at about 140K miles and she is on about 220k now.

They are easy enough to change once you have the cam off, £10-£15 from memory but you need 10 of them.
