There's no special test, although if you can feel jerkiness in the transmission then it could well be this component. When mine 'went', I was alerted by the friendly MoT tester. It actually lasted a number of months after he pointed it out. Its the type of thing that might stop you in your tracks, but isn't safety-critical. I think it could partially fail, and still leave you with enough 'drive' to complete your journey.
