If it's worse when in drive than in neutral then it's probably engine mounts. Vibration will be felt when driving.

Does the rev counter move when driving?

If no vibration is felt when driving then it could be related.

um i'm no car expert as most know but i've driven a W124 diesel with borked engine mounts (worn out) and in neurtral the car shook like crazy

once any power was applied via the accelerator the shaking immediately stopped, once the mounts were fixed everything improved

so... is this different behaviour for diesel versus petrol or ??????

Maybe, but perhaps it has more to do with engine type and chassis size. I was only going from personal experience. On my V8, idle in neutral was rough, but idle in drive caused a low down vibration throughout the whole car.
