The following has just been brought to our attention.

A woman was in a garden centre just across the border near Easton on the Hill.

When she returned to her car she saw in her mirror two wheelie bins blocking her exit.

On leaving her car with the engine running to move the bins someone got in and stole the vehicle.

This vehicle which is still outstanding is a Silver Merc C220 CDI Registration AU 06 MVP if seen please report to our controll room or myself.

Please be aware of this situation or any other which may require you to leave your vehicle even for a moment.

NEVER LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING OR THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION.

Hmmm, I've heard other similar instances to this that have happened in supermarket car parks. Everyone be careful, what is the world coming to :(

Two comments;

Don't people check clearances before they get into their cars? Or did these wheelie bins arrive after they had got in the cars?

To leave a vehicle unoccupied, with the engine running is an offence in itself.

This type of email has been doing the rounds for years. Yes, sound advice in general but come on!

This email was not 'doing the rounds' but a reported crime that in fact took place this morning. It came in from the local police today to all Neighbourhood Watch contacts in the county. I posted this (with certain personal details removed) in good faith and you can be assured that there is no 'come on' about it.

It does no harm to rub our noses and wake us up from time to time, it is the difference in the scams that catch people out

I'm ever so careful about taking the keys when I get out of the car but I think I too would have fallen for this con, especially if it takes place in a quiet spot like a garden centre.

Sorry I wasn't trying to belittle what you were saying but your email bares a similarity to one we received last year.

Lady gets into her car and proceeds to reverse out of parking spot (Tescos IIRC).
Sudden loud bang and a shout, she leaps out and rushes behind her car to see a youth + bike on the floor, youth holding his leg.
Whilst distracted his accomplice steals her handbag, purse and keys.....

Transpired the email didn't come from the police but was some sort of email address verifier.

A worthwhile cautionary tale and sound advice to be vigilant but not truely what it seemed

No offense at all, but you are quite right of course all sorts of scams to get email address verification and hence load one with junk mail even worse gain access to your PC in the hope of getting personal info etc etc.:-x

OK, a reminder on personal safety is always useful, but, to be fair there's some utter rubbish in our Neighbourhood Watch newsletter.

This story does sound remarkably like the leaflet in the rear window spoof email which has been around for many years - it looks all official and it's even posted, in good faith of course, on Police websites.
