I got this sent from a friend as I'm looking for one....he wants £1k for it..

1996 E200 auto est, abit rusty in usual corners but mechanically sound, only 93k miles service history, runs as it should, good reliable work horse with lots of miles left to clock ahead. road tax 02/09 mot expired as not using it .

£1k... We paid that for our E280 with Air con, MOT and Tax, along with a packed service history, 110k miles, Air Con, Alloys....

I'd want it a bit less... Personally. There's a 230TE on here for £250 that's reasonable, so where he got £1,000 from, I don't know.

Well, an MOT'd, Taxed, Good nick E280 is going to be worth more than a slightly scabby, 200TE with no MOT.

I'd say £4-600. Top end being £600 if it has some interesting toys (Not likely on a 200).

Get some pictures if you can.

Main things that make the car more appealing:

Air Con, Heated Seats, Electric Seats, Electric Windows, Remote Locking, 7 seat conversion.

Look out for:

Bad rust, blue smoke

The 210 is the car that replaced the 124, first came out for 1996 in full.

Check rust behind the door rubbers, wheel arches, inside edges of tail gate, you cant see the top spring mounting points.

I didn't realise it was a 210. I thought it was a very late W124 model.
That will command a slightly higher premium due to it being a newer design, but I'd still not pay £1,000 for it.

Check all over those wheel arch trims. They're normally used to hide impeding rust eating it's way through the bodywork. Check the whole thing for rust actually, being a W210, I'd be surprised if it's 100% Metal and no Oxide.

Do this, if it's ok then ask him to mot it. If he does this then I might pay £1,000 for it. But I would look for a more powerful model, can't imagine the 2 litre pulls such a heavy car with much vigour and I don't think a more powerful petrol model would lose much in economy either.

I just got told its the Elegance model..

I noticed that diffirence in paint too, but being honest, I'm beggining to think about not bothering with it, and looking for something else.

To be honest, an E200 Elegance may not have Air con, let alone heated leather or anything that interesting.

If it is two different colours, walk away. Likely hood is that he hasn't MOT'd it because there's damage under the reasonable exterior.

Keep an open view, likely hood is that you'll get a very nice W124 which are renound for build quality in much better order (MOT and Tax wise) with more toys for the money.

Look on Autotrader and early W210s are way cheaper than late W124s

If the car's got no MOT why even discuss it? There are plenty of cars out there with tax & MOT so why bother looking at one that starts with an open-ended bill the day you buy it?
