It would appear that Tesco are acting as a marketing portal for leasing companies. You notice the car advertised in post #2 is not available yet. Pre-order now for an earliest handover of 12 Jul 2011 That way I guess TESCO never actually stock any cars[/COLOR] http://www.vrl-financial-news.com/a...l-april-2011/tesco-to-sell-ex-lease-cars.aspx
Still might cut out a few middlemen?? I reckon the system will be fine unless the car turns out to be a dud--- that's when Tesco's reputation will be put to the test- they may just wash their hands and refer the customer to the leasing company?

they are taking advantage of the branding in insurance, loans, mobile phones and even recycled rubbish

Most car dealers rip us off, most small shops rip us off, even if they only have to go down the road , to buy straight from the farmer. People complain about Tesco's moving into their towns, but use them, You know it makes sense, They give alot of money to charity, give non technical people work, have a good pension with money in the pot. their shops are clean and tidy in and out, see how much rubbish laying around from local shops. Save the working man money on their goods. Every little helps. Yes I would buy a car from them, and Morrisons Asda Sainsbury. Hope this helps

Well said Brian - and Tesco's Customer Services (in store) are a model of how it should be done (airlines and car dealers please note!!)!

I can't imagine buying a car without a test drive. Any little creaks or squeaks and just generally feeling right.

Cars may be regarded as just a commodity by some but I assume by the fact that we are driving Mercedes and interested in them, that we all have a bit of emotion attached as well.

I bought mine from a Main Dealer with a years Tier one warranty and found the pre and post sales service first class. The warranty even got me a new battery, diagnosed at home, collected from Dealer by the mechanic and fitted, which I was amazed at.

It is unfortunate that their Service Department don't keep up the same standards.

Being in this field, it's something I haven't come across as of yet. I'm aware of them selling cars, and am bound to come up against it at some point. I had a look around the site, their pictures are not brilliant, and some aren't even of the right specification. The public might not notice, apart from one car was advertised as an estate and they had a picture of a 5 door. It seems the site maintence isn't brilliant. I think it won't stop some people as a lot of it is all on price. A lot of the Tesco cars are sourced through lease, tesco has a deal with a lease company, which should all be dealer maintained in the history. Personally I wouldn't buy from Tescos, I would always go with dealer. For sure you will pay that bit more, but dealer will have own workshop etc and it's somewhere to go back to. Also Tesco don't offer part exchange. I would prefer to deal face to face with a person, not over the phone. They can offer them so cheap as they have limited overheads.

I would buy from a dealer still, it's a more personal experience. Maybe my view is slightly biased.... :)

I believe in the saying, you get what you pay for.

"It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little, when you pay too much you lose a little money, that is all"

Course I get my shopping from Tescos, convienent and open when I need them too be. I do enjoy some M&S goodies when I have time to get to them, or can find somewhere to park.

Sainsburys did try do go into used car sales, but was an epic fail. Suppose in America it works as Walmart have car hypermarkets.

They are indeed taking over the world, but very very clever and are running the business very successfully. Can't knock them for that..... I just say leave selling cars to the professionals ;)

I am a keen student of buying MBs around 2 years old with <20,000 miles from MB dealers. I have bought 4 cars this way so far, without disappointment.

You can get the price down to around half the original sticker price, have a year's MB warranty (plus whatever else is in the Signature package) and Mobilo Life too.

For ex-lease cars, LloydsTSB have a site at Oldbury. These are ex-Leaseplan cars and are well presented with transferable manufacturer's warranties for a bit less than market price, against which they will give a sensible trade in on your car. They do shift a lot of cars, and their website is very friendly.

I have no interest to declare in this outlet, but it did strike me as a well organized operation staffed by competent people. I believe their raison d'etre is to prevent too many ex lease cars hitting the auctions and thereby collapsing the prices.
