Hi Malcolm

Going back to our conversation y-day in relation to the gas filled xenon bulb - looking last night the light which doesn't come on it looks to me as if it wants to start up (it flickers very quickly intermittently not fully on but a flash) so what I am trying to clarify is whether this means the bulb is OK and it is something else?

Ouch Len. the bulb could be failing to strike (Low gas) or the ballast could have failed with low output so that the lamp just flickers, I do not know if STAR can tell you what one has gone.

Ok - I will buy a new bulb (burner as they say) today ( I have managed to locate one for £68 inc vat. MB wanted £90. - will update over the weekend

In conversation with MB the man in the service dept says they have only replaced 20 in 5 years! My luck I guess :( .

** For other who may encounter this problem; MB in different outlets say conflicting things about the warranty on these items. They are covered(for 1 Year) but some outlets state they are not - now this is down to the person on the other end of the phone whom thinks it is just a bulb (which are not covered in any warranty - these come under wear/tear items). The gas filled bulbs are burners therefore come under parts...... though I’d fill people in on this

Problem with dipped beam

My dipped beam is showing as a malfunction.

Took the car to Halfords to get the bulb replaced. The guy took the bulb out and said that he hasn't seen one of those bulbs and that I would have to go to MB dealer. He was going to put the bulb back, but I said if it was knackered there was no point. He said that I could buy the bulb from the dealer and they would fit it for £5.

Since the bulb was removed, when I put my lights on the light without a bulb seems to light/spark but then goes off.

One MB dealer has quoted me £30 to supply and fit the bulb, this price has been quoted by using my registration number (assuming this means non-xenon?). Another dealer has quoted me £92 to supply and £50 to fit the bulb , this price has been quoted by the chassis number and bulb type (d2s 35w - assuming xenon?).

Why does it state that the xenon bulb must not be fitted yourself? Didn't seem to have any effect on the Halfords man when removing it.

Is there any way to test that the bulb is knackered or if it is something else?
How would I fit the existing (or new) bulb? £50 to fit a bulb seems a bit excessive.

Also - Looking for an independent in the Tyne & Wear area, if anyone can help?

It is the risk of death by the high voltage, the bulb glass must not be touched as human grease can kill it. You can fit it your self
