Xenon dipped headlight problems

Can anyone out there help?
Nearside headlight went out (xenon)
Bought new one (phew not cheap)
Fitted same, still not working, checked fuse ok
Switched working to nearside it would not work.
Have workshop manual no help.
Is there anything in line that could go between the fuse and light?
MOT due soon.
Car is 1998 c200 elegance.

Hello and welcome to the forum, we do not have very much info on these things as of yet, and you are the first one to have this fault that I know of.

I suspect the burner or the control unit for the light is the problem.

It is a bit tricky to be spot on correct with the diagnosis of this problem.

Thanks guys. I contacted a few dealers through a web site on these parts but they all replied that they did not have these parts listed. Does anyone have access to parts list for my merc to see if this part exists and if so any part number, description etc so I can order?
My wife drove car to work this morning in the fog and the light fault lamp in the dash was going on and off as if the headlight was coming on and off. like a loose connection but I have already checked for faulty earth and checked cables.
Could this be a symptom of this problem?

I would turn the lights on and tap all of the units with a insulated object to see if you can make the light go on an off. item 73 is the possible suspect, these do have a high voltage on them.

If you can make the light work by tapping it then it has a poor connection inside

Could not find fault garage checked it out they tell me ignition module shot
need new one £350 plus four hours to fit.
Anyone know where to get cheaper and could I fit myself with help from Haynes manual?

Thats modern society for you. Replace rather than repair.

Its the ballast thats gone, and it probably hasn't self destructed, it could be as silly as a loose connection, a faulty connector, or a burnt out component.

If it were me, I'd whip that ballast out and get it repaired. You'll not have the use of your car at night for the duration, but for £350 I could stand that.

If you do decide to get a new one, please insist on keeping the old one. All electrical devices can be repaired, we've been using ballasts in television and film for years and years, long before they appeared on cars.
