Xenon reset after adjusting rod repair..?

Good morning friends..I just repaired the adjuster rod at the rear axle on our s210. It had been swinging about in the breeze until the MOT man spotted it.

I thought it was the adjuster for the self levelling suspension, but last night we had a very interesting drive across scotland in the rain with the lights in what I presume is the default-if-broken, polite point-at-the-floor position. Scary as hell, especially with seemingly every numpty coming the other way on the full beam/fog lights/blingo daytime running lights combo, and the family and 2 dogs, 5 bikes and a 10 foot stand up paddleboard on board. I still got 38mpg though! Errm, sorry, where was I...?

Ah yes..So, a search tells me that the rod informs the xenon self leveller system (as well as the rear suspension?) and so, it perhaps now needs a reset on star? Or perhaps its broke..?

..and so my question (finally) - can my local non specialist garage who just have the generic diagnostic computer reset these? And does the self levelling suspension also get reset at the same time? Any other shortcut way of getting them to point in vaguely the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

It automatically adjust if all good, you do have another sensor on the front axle, if both lamps down, then an axle sender.

this has nothing to do with the suspension, that should be sitting just fine

No...when you reconnect the rod, as you have done, everything will be fine. Star does not do this on our cars.

There are of course two sensors on the back axle. One for the lights, the other for the suspension. The one for the lights is merely a straight rod with a connector at each end. I presume this is what you fixed? And by fixing...do you mean you put in a new part?

Hi Narcaic

Yes, it was a straight rod, top end connected to an electronic box via an arm, bottom end bolted to a mounting on the axle. My repair was simply to drill out the rusted/broken bottom bolt assembly, and replace with a nut/bolt/washer. I wrapped the bolt in a little jacket of rubber as the original was rubber mounted.

I guess if this isnt a star reset issue, maybe the repair isnt allowing enough movement, or maybe the sender box has been damaged by the rod swinging about.

I did this "temporary" repair 3 years ago in the same way as you while I waited for the part from MB. The part cost £12, and is still sitting in my garage for the day when the repair fails.

In my case the lights lit up the tops of hedges when the rod was hanging loose. The sensor may be done. Did it make no difference at all when you reconnected the rod?

The way to check is to disconnect the rod...now push the sensor fully one way, observe, and then fully the other way and observe if the lights move. They should...fully up and fully down.

It is only a Hall sensor,, if you find nothing wrong do check that the front one is on as the system requires both in order to work
