Is anyone out there aware of what the yellow diamond on white background road sign actually means ?

These are normally found on entering villages, towns, cities & other built up areas, with the same signs having a diagonal black line through them upon exiting said built up areas.

These are not only found in any one particular EEC Country, but all of them excepting us being the UK.

Any views or opinions on what these weird looking signs mean please.
Every country in mainland Europe has them - except us.

It means you're on the main road with right of way over junctions.

With lines through it means that you might have to give way up ahead somewhere.

As said the yellow diamond means that you have priority over other traffic. If it has a black diagonal line through it then you don't.

Be aware that in France and some areas of Belgium you may come across this sign on roundabouts meaning that those entering it have priority over those on it!
Although rare this used to be the standard for France and is still enforced on some roundabouts.

And some villages too, very unerving when you don't realise and they just pull out on you.
Apparently it comes from the days of horse and carrages as the drivers entering the main road could not see what was coming so they gave them priority and the ones on the main road (who could see them pulling out) HAD to give way....... scary it is still in place.

As Roving Hawk neatly summarised, this sign....
Routeprotegee.jpg

...means traffic on this road has priority at any junction.

That is until you see this....
Routenonprotegee-1.jpg

...when two further signs come into play.

This....
Priorite.jpg

...means you have priority at the upcoming junction.

...and this...
Prioriteadroit.jpg

...means that however insignificant the minor roads at the next junction appear, priority is always to the right.

The French have a quaint penchant for imposing this last Priorité
on tiny roads just round a blind right hand bend..... excellent for an unexpected adrenalin rush!:rolleyes:

'Antijam' your the star !!

Many thanks to all for really enlightening me to the hazards of these signs and particularly to ANTIJAM for going to the trouble of putting up the pictures.

BTW and as a longshot, ...when I was driving through southern Italy & on Sicily I saw similar GREY or SLATE in place of yellow diamonds - any further ideas please or perhaps their only peculiar to ITALY!

Many thanks again, Keith.
:)
