I have a 2001 S320 with a very noisy airmatic compressor. I have read lots of posts but am still not clear on the solution.

The suspension seems to be working fine, however as I am a bit deaf it was only when the pump got really noisy that I could here it when driving.

I have swapped the relay, but probably even if that was the problem the damage is done, so no change.

Now the real question: The pumps seems to run alot of the time when driving, especially during the initial mile or so of a journey. It seems to always stop when i come to a stand still. Is this normal?

I am happy to replace the pump, but if the underlying fault is that it is overworking and that has caused it to wear out then that isnt a fix. The other possibility is that a tired old pump on its last legs has to run more often and that a new pump will be ok.

Can anyone suggest which is more likely?

Finally I have seen statements that the new compressor will need setting up with STAR, whilst others say this isnt neccessary, does anyone have the definitive answer on that one?

Thanks in advance

Mark.

It do sound like pump is on its way out, Its poss that you have a air leak on the system making it work harder but nomally the relay, Dont need star for pump swap!

Same issue .. however...

..my car's pump has finally given up the ghost and it looks like someone's drastically lowered it!
Does anyone know if this is a 'simple' case of switching out the pump and all will be well again?
I've been quoted £350 for the part and "a little for labour" what ever that means! - if any one has an idea of what is reasonable please let me know.

I hope it's simple - i've had so many issues with this car it's not funny any more.
I'm driving the wife's little Honda Jazz at the moment and i'm seriously considering of switching with her.

Hi Neely Weely, welcome to the Forum.

Pump and relay are around £250-£300. It should take less than an hour to change the pump, so depends on the hourly rate.

I have a 2007 mer s class cdi320l and when I push the button to rise the vehicle it makes a whinning noise and that noise also comes on and off when I start the vehicle and whilst I'm driving..from what I've seen on the website it could be my airmatic pump is that correct? Second issue I have is there is squeeking noise that I hear when I go over bumps and has been for last couple of days but now has just stopped. What could that be?

Roll bars can squeak as can other components.
