Right just to clear up the confusion on my part - Are you saying that there are circumstances that brake pins could erroneously be re-used provided they are not badly corroded/distorted as in your particular case ?

I have the original pins in my V70R and 16 years old, they have been out at least 5 times on the front and they are still like new, they knock out with a few taps and then pull out by hand.

On my CL216 I had to grind own a 10" long punch 1"Ø to get them out, they will be replaced at the next pad change.

I must admit I am surprised to hear the tales of corroded pad pins on MB, I have changed so many brake pads over the years on all sorts of makes and never, not EVER had any problems taking pins out, it seems MB use just base steel with no protection at all if they corrode so easily.
Having said that I changed front and rear on my ML when I first got it (3 years old) and the pins were fine.

The answer in getting these pins out is a good punch, use one too small and it does nothing other than peen over the end of the pin.

As I said I needed a good one and to save driving 50 miles to get one I ground down a huge punch to the 3mm the size of the end of the pin. In a way its like trying to remove disc with a toffee hammer by using one too small.

Do squirt some WD40 or plus gas on the pin as it could be tight all the way.

Yes EPC sell these things as do GSF and your local motor factor

UPDATE: I had new alloys put on my car in October. Could this be why my pin fell out? Would/Could changing an alloy cause a problem?

Nothing to do with that at all, wheels can make no difference.
