My old 270 was he same as yours, ran a couple of tanks of shell vpower through as well as some Forte cleaner and a couple of Italian tune ups to clear everything out, then on the morning of the mot I'd take it for a 30 minute run to get it hit and a one last Italian tune up for 10 minutes and the mot'er always asked how my car always had lower emission readings than newer stuff
Yeah I’m not one for putting cheap diesel in to be honest but lately I have lowered my standards :( but i think I’ll start putting more premium stuff in and I’ve just literally been for an “Italian tune up” drive also I added some of that fuel treatment and you know what the black smoke has pretty much vanished!!! Could it be that it was just sitting at too low RPM for a long period of time? And it’s just built up?

Diesels come up badly when you do short runs and potter around. It’s why I bought a V6 petrol instead because then the sedate driving is enforced by the visit to the petrol station visit

I do a fair few miles a year I mean ive done in excess of 15k miles this year, I’ve been doing mostly cross country driving though so a lot of 30mph speed limits etc, it’s a shame there forcing diesel off the road I’d love a petrol version potentially an E500 but the fuel costs would just drown me :(

The 270 likes to be revved and used o keep it clear, I used to do about 25k a year in mine and after long euro runs at 80 if I stuck my foot down I'd still see a plume of smoke

You say that, however the last 100 mile journey I managed 38mpg average in the 3.2 - bear in mind that was with the full family loaded in with a weekends worth of luggage and the M6/M62 50mph motorway. I might have been draughting wagons too ;-) but even with that considered that’s pretty damn good for a 220bhp petrol.

I’ve managed 31mpg in the SL too doing a steady 70 all the way in the same roads (before the smart motorway)

I must say people don’t seem to be a fan of the sound of these old 5 cylinder engines I quite like them! They do sound aggressive sometimes, maybe the trick is to just give it a rev and an Italian tune once in a while to clean it out!

Interesting, you see I’m looking minimum 33mpg in terms of next car as this is what the lowest I get going cross country but only when I’m not being careful, most of the time I get 36-37mpg. It’s just when I look at combined figures for older petrol mercs and it just puts me off slightly, Now that you’ve said they ain’t too bad on fuel I can broaden my horizon when it comes to upgrading in the future!

Also which SL we on about here? We own a R129 500SL and that certainly hasn’t done anywhere near 31mpg! (Possible because we haven’t taken it on any big journeys yet)

Yep. R129. The m119 lump. When it was fully serviced I used to get mid twenties out of it and got 31mpg. Once. The last long journey I did in it I managed.... 19mpg lol. It needs a service and it wasn’t running correctly then tbh

Tbh overall it gets 20mpg. On short journeys it gets 18. Long motorway journeys however it’s economy just improves the longer it goes on. 29 on a run back from Scotland at a constant 75 after it had sat at a dealers for months.

The R231 SL500 is a little more frugal, I am "enjoying" mine getting 21mpg around town, 25mpg cross country, 30mpg Motorway, cruise control set just under 80mph on the last 300 mile journey. Not bad for a 4.7l biturboV8.

My r129 (m119/4 speed) struggles to get near 25mpg even after a 300 mile run on French motorways. Last trip was about 21mpg.. our r230 (5 litre) gets 27 on UK motorways if I'm gentle but struggles to 20 round town.

I used to buy some forte from amazon after the local mot place would end up addding some to my e220 (no dpf) and wife’s Ford smax (no dpf) and they’d breeze through

The 211 was doing 30k a year and yet still would smoke a bit but mainly after a long low rev motorway run - after a cross country dash it would be fine....

Both gone now so actually with a dpf it’s more challenging to actually know whether the engine is clean/needs cleaning or otherwise.... not all progress is good

Don't use the additive in the tank of diesel you use for the test. Get it to do it's stuff before hand. I always use a shot of redex if I'm doing a long fast trip. Then be sure to give it some stick in the week leading up to the test.
My diesel Primera used to smoke under load due to over sedate short trips. I have a steep hill near home. I'd floor it up hill in second a few times and smoking would disappear.

Through towns I’ve reckoned I’ve worked out about 11mpg there abouts. When Goodwood revival is on I was thinking about taking the SL down

Yeah I believe the smoke could of been down to a constant revving I was on the motorway for 250 miles at 72mph (translates into just over 2k RPM) all the way down. I’m aware they’re quite strict with DPF’s now any smoke of any sort is an instant fail

Mine is a 1995 - electronic injection with distributor caps. It’s reasonable for me to get 25 on a run in the past. 90mph with old oil, MAF fault and the roof down up to Scotland yielded 19mpg. I think it’s at its best with 0w30, freshly serviced, all systems running correctly!

Worst I’ve seen was probably 13mpg driving like a complete idiot
