Car has been parked for a month whilst I was away. Started first time on the weekend and no limp home voltage issues.

Oddly the driver's door mirror glass has become more bronze then the nearside; possible photochromatic stuff issue?

without a doubt. Just put a normal glass in there if you dont want to spend hundreds on a new one!!!

01/03/13; 121,327 miles:

B service plus fuel filter
Rear brake pads replaced
No.1 injector replaced
O rings at lift pump and pressure pump replaced
Swirl flap linkage fixed to the open position

£490.09

Black smoke now disappeared for all intents and purposes bar really heavy kickdown (and even then much reduced). Knocking noise from motor on heavy load absent. :)

Developed a random morse-code tapping noise from behind the glove box area. Starts when key is in position 2 and continues for a few minutes after car is started. No other symptoms that I am aware of.

the pollen filter

sits up in that bit. Maybe a leaf or a catkin in there. The fan will run in pos 2, so w/out the engine to mask it, it will be the only time you do hear it.
It could also be a german spy who doesn't know that for him, the war is over.

I had that on a 202 under the carpet on the front passenger side. It was a relay...don't know about the 210s though...never happened to me.

I have been seriously thinking about buying a 2002 my E320, but this story has put a serious dent in my enthusiasm :shock:
Is this a normal sort of story?

Keith, its difficult to write if it is indeed an accurate expectation of what to expect from such a model but it is accurate for THIS particular car.

The E series from 2006 onwards had around 2,000 inprovements on the previous model and should really be the minimum I "personally" would consider.

Mine is a late 2006/56 plate W211 E280 Sport and I haven't had anywhere near the amount of work as the one in this particular thread although my car is much younger.

There are cars however that are the same age and model as in this thread that have not had such work but I guess its the luck of the draw.

For me the 2006 onwards w211 series E class is an excellent vehicle but the same warning goes for "any" marque you buy I suppose. Buy the best you can and get an accurate appreciation of the service history and all bills associated. I have found that if a buyer has the vehicle serviced on time from either the dealer or indy and has virtually ALL the receipts of work carried out during their ownership, you cant really complain as you have ALL the facts about that vehicle.

Just do your homework and check the sort of average running costs and the costs of servicing and expensive parts such as SBC braking system which is a favourite on these forums.

I for one am happy with Toby's thread as it gives us an insight of what "can" happen from a cost perspective with the marque.

Still doesnt make it a bad car! It shows it has a patient and appreciative owner who wants to keep the car in as good a running order as possible.

Hope this helps.

Pete

Something to note, this car is nearly 12 years old vs yours which is nearer 7 :)
