Just another woe I'm afraid - that would throw up a different warning like 'convenience functions not available' or something similar

Sitting in a recovery truck warming up now as driver fits skates to my car . He's going to take me part way and then another truck for the remainder.

What an awful night you had! Sorry to hear it.
Anyway I believe if its an ESM it will need coding.
Your battery was only how it was because the engine wasn't running of course.
The low voltage was then throwing up all sorts of errors
The fan running is interesting, you mean the electronic engine fan or the cabin blowers?

A lesson to us all not to ignore the dash messages or put things off- it never ends well.

thanks fellas , home now

john it was the big main engine rad fan that was going mental

just had a couple new batteries delivered and got a slave battery on there forthe moment to see if ive got a whacky current drain .............i know for sure these gearboxes dont like a dodgy battery , the missus car did this kinda thing last year but the system didnt shut down ...new batteries fixed it

yeah dont be taking these warning messages lightly folks ........it's been ****** misery and i've not even fixed it yet ........i suspect there's more gnashing of teeth to come .......i noticed last night the missus brought my star out and it wouldn't talk to the etc department

the line just read transmission instead of electronic transmission control

any way back home safe and sound i'll keep you posted .

not sure what i'm gonna do about getting new bits coded.............

Best of luck- without stating the obvious, check your coolant levels too when the rest is done.....

I would have taken it to a specialist with an online star, otherwise it's another recovery (doubt the aa will do it twice) to have it coded.

Well first things first really....

just glad to get home and urgently had to put a gear box in the missus car , after that packed up .........not very impressed with these w221s.

both out of action is not helpful .just finished fannying about with hers so give it a try in the morning .

need to see why my car isn't talking to the transmission and get these batteries on

just hope the sams are ok after the aa chaps had their booster packs on the batteries......little bit worried that the suspension dropped overnight

Could anyone give me a clue as to what has actually happened to cause this failure

The mechanism has either jammed inside, or the control circuity has failed inside the selector module. Likely that the latter, as when it looses coms with certain control modules, the engine fan goes full speed.

Thanks Alexander

i dropped the box out and have got the ism off.

the gearbox was indeed stuck in P .

I'm looking to send this ism to softelectronic.com for repair , it's cheaper than a new one and wont need scn coding.

they have asked me for fault codes but there seems to be a lack of communication to the transmission in general rather than specifically to the ism
and i cant get at the codes .

transmission category reads " transmission " instead of electronic transmission control " and i dont think i can get any codes out .

i'll have another look in a bit .

any views on this any body ?

S class
In an Sclass you can get it out of park by pulling hard on the gear stick and tapping it sharply on top with a rubber or wooden mallet or similar.
