Mercedes are German cars. They sell loads of them in Germany and mainland Europe.
Ever spent a winter in Germany? Plenty of snow and very very few stuck cars. They're not all manuals but they are all wearing winter tyres.

I was at a meeting in Paris with a German colleague just before last winter and he heard it had snowed earlier than usual and he was dreading the journey home - he said it's always a nightmare with people being late to put winter tyres on.

How odd. :)

You should work like mad all winter and then take the summer off!

I love the irony...as a heating engineer you survive because of the cold weather...or else there would be no need for the heat.

I bought it as a unused wreck from a Barn in Ireland and spent 17 years doing a nut and bolt rebuild, did it all my self

In fact a Northern Ireland car with that "IJ" mark. Whereabouts was the barn Malcolm? I suspect somewhere in County Down.

Haven't got any winter tyres on mine and haven't had any issues thus far apart from the odd esp when hitting the accelerator too hard from a standstill.

Superfast long boats were often used for smuggling cigarettes and the term stuck, not sure but I think cigarette is a brand of boat maker too.

The word cigarette has only recently become a dirty word.

true but we don't really get much in the way of flooding, all those hills and rivers that wander off into England

If I believe the figures, this is the UK's worst winter for 250 years, 170 years, since records began.

My commute each week is literally the length of the country, from Hampshire to Northumberland, at 355 miles each way. Actually popped into Jockland yesterday (cos I could).

My Merc has been a dream drive.

The weather has not caused me any issues. However the standard of driving of the majority of other road users frightens me.
