The tyres on the rear are 2 week old Continentals..
The ones on the front are half worn Dunlops of some sort.

Dave from "SAM/UNIT" seemed to rule out tyres when he tried the car because the noise / vibration was present on several different road surfaces.
Its at its worst between 20 - 30 mph.

1st thing to do is put matching Conti's on the front--! it must look awful anyway with odd tyres???

Fair enough. I agree it is less likely, but if you get an opportunity to swap wheels and tyres for a run it would definatively rule this out

You are very much correct about doing a wheel / tyre swap..
But unfortunately I dont know anyone locally with suitable wheels and tyres so this isnt an option.
The tyres (255 / 45 x 17) are too expensive to replace on a whim..
If it is the tyres then I shall live with it till the time for changing them is at hand.

Thanks very much for your input..:)

Ha ha..
The sizes are the same front and rear on my car..
To be honest unless you read the lettering on the sidewall you cannot tell that the front tyres are a different size to the rear..

I dont know if I have Yorkshire / Scots genes hidden somewhere within me but I really dont want to throw away perfectly good tyres !

No not just a whim at all --d--lops are crap anyway and also the car will handle like s--t + look terrible close up with different makes of tyres on !--get rid of them.
When you indulge in a decent car and spend so much money why penny pinch and spoil it all for the sake of decent tyres?
Sorry for being so harsh --but it winds me up --pet hate is odd tyres--(s/ing off -going to golf now)

I havent "penny pinched"..
They were on when I bought the car.
I feel the purchase of a dial guage comming on.. If I am pre armed with proof of warped discs then I can help the Poor clueless MB mechanics to cure a problem on my third visit to them !

As for the heater..... Thats another story !

Simon I would have thought if you went to a decent tyre company you could get them to check for a warped disc. Tell them you are about to get 2 new front tyres but need the disc checked first and then they might do it free.
Barry:)

Nice one Barry..Good idea mate..

Just had a look online to see how much the "cheap" Dunlops are that the car has fitted to the front . . . £198 EACH !!!!!
Not that cheap at all !!
That was from "Event tyres"..

there must be someone on this forum who is close to you that would lend you their wheels for a quick test run. Where are you based Simon?

The MB warranty on used cars ..that was mentioned earlier.. is paid for by the person who buys a used car... It is added on to the price of the car...It works very simialr to the other warranty companies out there.. Central fund and each car sold pays into it.. then any other Mb dealer can access that warranty and carry out the work...So always remember that YOU have already paid for it .... and MB like any other company dont do freebies ..even on the original new car warranty...

Good luck in your claim Simon. My own experiences tell me that MB's superlative engineering qualities are positively ruined by UK franchised dealerships, who continue to exasperate and frustrate in increasing measures.

Yet you can still find the odd gem in a sea of turds - why MB HQ tolerate this is of some wonder. The bad ones are doing untold damage, though as they're not members of the MB "family" why would they be that bothered?

MB need to take control and stop their "front of house" organisations treat customers with contempt. The irony of it is, we went specifically to an approved dealer to avoid exactly this carry on and they're no better.

We've learnt our lesson, it's a decent indie all the way for us in future. Thank goodness for this forum and the recommendations/warnings.

Simon you can rule out the disc as a fault the knock would be heard and felt either through the steering or the car and Cole would have picked that up. If it has not been resolved by next week I would love a test run. The car is genuine at least so that is a good thing and a worth while phone call.

If they say there is still no fault, then you could say that you will have it checked out by a friend and see what they say

I'm afraid this has been a problem for MB for many years. At one point they started opening their own showrooms but it fizzled out.

I'm aware of two cases where franchises were pulled but the new owners simply employed the same bunch of deadbeats. MB were not delighted but were powerless to control who the businesses were taken over by or who the new owners employed.

One of the biggest problems they have is with dealer stockholding, or rather lack of.

There is a dealership I have used where the staff seem to be on different planets. Some of them actually discourage business with their manner and others fall over backwards to help and are genuinely dismayed if anything is not right.

Thank you bobceeuk,
All in all it doesnt inspire much confidence does it?
Overall I am very happy with the car "DESPITE" MB's attempts to spoil it.

Once again a big thank you to all who have given thought and advice to my issues...I really do appreciate it very much indeed.
Its quite heart warming to see how indignant you folks get on behalf of me...A stranger to most of you..
I am actually flattered and touched by it.
Thank you all so much for this..
I need my beauty sleep now so I shall say good night to you all.:(

Been reading with interest.

Simon, I do hope you get satisfactory answers .... You're no alone in wanting the best ....

Just a question regarding the STAR tool to the members who own and know STAR.

Are different FW versions compatible with each other? As in is there a possibility that the garage version is different and thereby genuinely not reading what the member versions are reading? [ I ask out of interest only and to close a loose end]

As I know you will, do let us know how this goes .... beats EastEnders this!
