Do you think it could be more than just the headbolts gaskets and lifters?
I wonder how much my warranty would cover if it's an entire engine rebuild...

Iv just spoken to mb warranty and the chap on the phone confirmed headbolts are covered. However he confirmed the head gaskets are too (I made it clear I have a used merc and its extended warranty). But I checked the warranty handbook and listed under "items specifically EXCLUDED are as follows:
- Any seal, gasket or sealant (pg 14)

Difficult position to be in, that's for sure. I can see why MB can't provide a quote, without stripping the engine first, but I wouldn't necessarily trust your average MB dealer to come up with a definitive explanation, particularly if there is the possibility of you having to fund the repairs yourself at MB dealer rates. I'd also be concerned whether the original hose failure was misdiagnosed as well, or the full extent of the cause and damage was not investigated. Seems too much of a coincidence to me. Also a pretty strange set of circumstances surrounding the history of the car and the seller's interest in it!
If you are satisfied that what you have been told is correct about the warranty covering work by a none MB dealer, if it were my car I would be taking it to a well respected indie for inspection and diagnosis. If it's a head bolt issue causing damage I can't see MB warranty being able to exclude the cost of gaskets, since these would have to be replaced anyway as part of the repair costs I would think. If the cause of the problem is not covered by the warranty at least an indie's rates are going to be a lot less than an MB dealer rates. Hope you get it sorted.

Update: received a nice c300 amg line from europcar with ambient light, digital dash ect. Unfortunately a week is the most I can keep it for so they replaced with MBs own loan car, C180 se estate lol.

Just received a call this morning and they have confirmed head gasket will be covered by warranty! Just need to pay for sparks which I'm not complaining about. Excellent news so far. But still bracing for the actual extent of fault to be discovered once they start taking her apart.

Good result indeed! A lot of work to get there.

We often get stuck between the warranty company and the customer. Often mediating where possible, but it always gets difficult when the warranty company wont budge, and the customer wants the car sorted (Rightfully so).

Often the dealer will just say "return the car" but the customer wont for their own reasons, and then we end up in the middle of stalemate!

Must be very difficult in those situations, particularly with a car taking up valuable workshop space.

Got a call from dealers and apparently they've replaced the gaskets and started the car up! Very thankful there weren't any other faults.

However I wasnt kept in the loop although I sent an email trying to get an update last week. I assumed they would have called me once the engine was stripped. I havent got knowledge on amg engines but I've always read owners replacing other parts when doing the headbolts, such as valve lifters and camshaft adjusters. I wouldve wanted the techs to check if these were good and wouldnt have minded paying to replace them since I would have saved on the labour.

I'm currently waiting on service advisor to get back to me and let me know exactly what has been replaced. Head bolts would have to be removed in order to get to the the gaskets right?

Atleast warranty covered the job which was my worry. I just have to pay for the sparks and a new battery.
