Hi,

Well I purchased my W208 '98 reg CLK230K over the weekend. In general I am very happy with it. It has all the toys and was kept in relatively good condition. I am going to treat it to a full valet (by me) and a professional touch-up/polish over the next few weeks...

I noticed one thing however. I had a 150 mile return trip after collecting the car and I noticed something strange. I has reset the trip computer before starting my journey and at about half way it was reading 100miles. I turned on my GPS (GARMIN Nuvi) and set it on the dash. Both the Odometer and trip computer are actually incrementing in Kilometers and not Miles but the units stated on the trip computer are miles?? Also, I set the speed limiter to 100mph miles and it kicked in at 100km/ph and not 100mph?
In one sence I am thinking, great, I have purchased a car with 90,000kms and not 90,000 miles but on the other hand it is a bit strange.

Has anybody come across this before???

Also, can I change the limiter and trip computer to km instead of miles as to avoid any further confusion.

Thanks,

Mike.

jberks,

It is a W208. How do I get into the menu? There is only a 1 line odometer display and a 1 line trip display? Where are the buttons to change/toggle?

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question.

I think that can only be done on STAR maybe the previous owner went abroad often

not a dumb question.
I thought it was the later model with the buttons on the wheel.
As malcolm says, it was probably done on the star disgnostics. You need to call into a dealer or merc specialist who can reprogram it.

Simple

Is it really as simple as that?

My display reads e.g. 100 miles and when gauged against the gps, it increments correctly based on kms..

If the display is changed to read kms will my 100miles change to 160km?

My point being, the odometer reads 90,000 miles but it is actually 90,000kms on the clock.

How much should it cost to get the dealer to change that??

I am still trying to figure out this one.

How can the trip and odometer be incrementing in kms when the display actually 'says' miles beside the number?

I would have thought that if you chjanged the units, then the increments would match the units. i.e when miles are diaplayed, the odometer would increment after 1 mile. When kms are displayed, the odometer would increment after 1km.

Can anybody help!!

Would a main dealer be able to explain this?

MB dashes can be confusing but you have to remember that they are computer based so theoretically they are capable of doing all sorts of odd things depending on how they are programmed.
At the end of the day, it is an MPH speedo whose trip has, deliberately or otherwise switched to kph. Either way, a diagnostic machine can reset the dash back to default settings.
There are various cluster reset people around who may be able to help. Their normal job is mileage resets but they may be able to return clusters to the factory settings. Failing that, an indie or dealer should be able to sort it.
It should just be a plug in the laptop job.
