00 320 CDI Won't rev

I have just aquired a 2000 E 320 CDI and it won't rev past 2500rpm. As it aproaches 2500 the power just drops off and the box changes up. If I hold it in gear all power stops just past the 2500 mark. I've heard many theories what it might be from Cats to ECU problems but can anyone tell me the most likely cause.

Took a look at the MAS and it is extremely clean. So clean I would guess it has been changed very recently. Filter full of flies however even after cleaning and removing filter completely no difference. I will get a new filter but I don't believe it is the underlying problem.

If the MAS is good yet the car is still in limp home mode then the ECU will have stored fault codes. Have them read out and either post them here or have your garage undertake the diagnosis and repair

Just took it to local garage. They changed the MAS and problem solved. Better still it took 30 mins and all under warranty. Thanks to all for your help.
