124 series 230te weird symptoms HELP

hi just wonder if anyone recognises this .I start car it kicks in immediately ,then it wont maintain tickover .I have to hold revs at about 1500rpm for about 30 seconds .Then it runs ok ,except ,for when travelling it seems to reach a cruising speed and seems to pull back as though the revs are dropping off a little. its a really strange feeling .Any help appreciated this is driving me nuts .

check fuel pump relay - replace with a known good part if possible. the relay will exhibit gradual breakdown, and these symptoms *could* suggest that the relay is going bad ...
