129 SL-Class rear seats

Can anyone help me please?

I've been told by one person that the old-shape SL (the square one) didn't have the tiny rear seats at the beginning, even as an option, but that they became standard fitment later in the run.

Then someone else told me that they were always an option, right from the start - but only ever an option.

Can anyone tell me what's true please?

I've got a 1990 500SL - an R129. It was the first model year for the car.

Mine has rear seats, which were a factory option. As far as I am aware, the rear seats were ALWAYS an optional extra during the cars production.

My 11 y/o stepson fits in a treat in the back, although when he starts growing I guess its CLK time? I doubt my missus will want to sit in the back!
