Hello, my mate as the 180cdi 54reg he tell's me it's overdue its service by a few " thousand miles" how many exactly im not too sure, car done 90,000mls.

The other day while driving lost lots of power and black smoke emiting from exhaust, merc picked up the car took it to the main dealer here in leeds and found turbo gone at £3,000? for the part plus fitting plus damage to cat lamda sensor etc.

My question is are these common on a merc diesel? or is this just down to the poor servicing ie lack of a good oil change and bearing failure to the turbo?

90K miles ..turbos do go, changing the oil and using a good quality oil can help, but they do run hot and spin fast and as such are prone to failure...

If it's a few thousand over I assume your friend isn't very careful with regard to servicing. This is the result. Turbos can go but you drastically increase the chances of failure if you don't change the oil when recommended.

Give MercCare in Pudsey a ring, they may have a cheaper alternative.

Not a bad idea to let the engine idle for a minute or so before switching off. Gives the turbo a chance to slow down a bit before cutting off its oil supply. Failure to do this often leads to premature turbo failure.

mine failed at 91k miles, a W203 220CDI.
I paid £660 off the internet for a new garrett turbo and paid for it to be fitted.

Mine failed at 21,000

Luckily still under warranty, new turbo, intercooler and pre cat fitted.
