I seem to have some rattling noise coming from the engine on my merc 190 2.3 16 cosworth, ive got it checked from a mechanic and he says its the timing chain rattling caused by the faulty tensioners, what i was wondering is it easy to change just the tensioner yourself and how many tensioners does this type of engine have (2.3 16) also do i have to set up the tensioner to a certain level ??
Also how much and where from i can get them from??

Hi

If the timing chain is noisey, you can change the tensioner by its self. Although with out listening to the engine I would change both. It could be changed DIY. But it is easy to get it wrong & also by the sound of the question, you don't sound like you have a lot of experience (please do not take this as a slur against you). But

1. The tensioner is not easy to get to.
2. If you don't know what you are doing you can cause more trouble than you already have.

Suggest you get your mechanic or speacialist to carry out the work for you.

To answer your question there is only 1 tensioner.

Good luck
