Hi,

I'm new to Mercedes ownership and have just bought a 1988 190 Auto with a few problems that need fixing, the main one being the gearbox.

In two days of driving (about 40 miles) it has only changed out of 2nd gear twice. The max. speed I can get is about 56 at the red line.

The ATF is possibly abit high but looks clean. I can't see any logic behind the very occasional changing, have tried all kinds of engine speed and accelerator pedal pressures with no clues.

I have no background knowledge of auto's so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

Did you test drive the car B4 you bought it?

Has the problem developed whilst you have had it?

Have you tried shifting the selector to all the various positions? Does reverse select OK?

Does the selector move freely through the gate?

Do you have a Haynes manual for this as the cable may need to be adjusted, not a difficult job.

Let us know how you get on......

Cheers for the reply Motardman. Bought the car cheap off a mate knowing the gearbox wasn't changing properly, hoping that I could somehow sort it out.

The selector goes through all the positions and feels free enough. I can select park, neutral and reverse, all of which do their jobs. Its the 2, 3, D and the S/E switch that don't make any difference.

I got a haynes manual with the car so will look up the cable tonight. What does the cable do?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi

By the sounds of it. The box is burnt out. K2 clutch packs will have burnt out. Into laymans terms either new box or that box repaired.

PS. Every body tries changing the oil. Never works. They only kid themselves it makes a difference!!!

PPS. I hope I am wrong!!!

I tried adjusting the pressure cable last night according to the haynes manual with no joy.

I did get it changing gear though! If I go into 2 then D it goes into 1st gear, changes up to 2nd later up the revs, and if if rev it upto 6000rpm in second and hold it there is occasionally changes into 3rd.

I then tried adjusting the pressure cable to both extremes of the adjustment thread with no noticeable difference.
