Hello all ... I bought a 1990 190E 2.6 for a grand with the trans R&R'd. I got it so cheap because the dealer couldn't get the trans shop to make it shift correctly, and the trans shop wouldn't touch it after the dealer brought it back the third time. The trans wound up to 5,000 RPM's or more, then hard shifted. 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th shifted flawlessly. If you just went easy on the gas the car stayed in first until you revved it on up to redline. I flew to Chi town from Texas, picked up the car at the trans shop. Checked it out & figured the B-2 piston wasn't the problem, so I did some side of the road adjustment to the modulator valve,(including new cap, which I had brought along) and also adjusted the kickdown and gas cables. This made a fantastic difference. The car drove 1200 miles flawlwessly ... with 2 exceptions ...
1. It shifts smoothly from first to second, but shifts at 3500 RPMs, all other shifts are perfect.
2. If you kick it down into hard passing gear before reaching 40 MPH,
the trans flares until you let off the gas, then is perfect again.
If you wait til somewhere between 40 -50 MPH, before kicking the gas hard to the floor. The car responds beautifully, running true, hard and smooth right up to shift @ 5000 or so RPMs, then alls well till next stop.
I have rotated the modulator counterclockwise app 3 full turns, should I go more then test, or am I missing something other than pulling the valve body and doing a kick butt cleaning. Thanx Don :?
