Hi golf,

Thought I would chip in as I have had a couple and like them. My father also currently has two 190E's( One immaculate one a bit ropey) and one 2.5 16V.

Basically mercedes produced the best part of 2 million 190E's. It was also the entry model mercedes when it came out. My father has a funny outlook on the 190. He says if they hadn't made it soo ****** good a nice one like he has got would be worth something now.

The fact is they are undestructable. They produced nearly 2 million and theres still nearly 2 million driving around today( All you have to do is go to Lisbon or a Greek city and all the taxi drivers have them!)

It is because the production figures and the fact that they all still work that will prevent the car from ever being a desirable classic in our lifetime.

A cosworth is a different story and I believe these will appreciate in value if in the right condition.

Hope this helps.

is the 190e a desirable car?

i know very little about m.b.,but seem to be learning a little, but slowly..:p

Hello again,

I can understand your frustration. The chief determinant of car prices is "the market", which for volume cars is pretty much decided by the used car price guides. They claim to depict what the market tells them, but my own view is that by dictating figures they inform the market on car values.

To accommodate and absorb new cars into the market (precisely what the world can't do at present), the value of existing cars is written down in a predictable way, until they fall off the scale or go to the crusher.

That was fine until quite recently, when rust and technical problems made cars less usable and therefore less valuable over time and people could afford new ones.

In the last 10 years or so, however, better rust proofing (galvanization), better engineering and metallurgy, better manufacture (tolerances and elimination of faults in manufacture), better lubricants and fuels have all combined to slow the rate of decay just at a time when manufacturing industry is making more and more of these more durable cars and concurrently at a time when the money supply has dried up and people can't afford them.

As a student I could only buy the cars of yesteryear and had to cherish them and be able to fix them to keep them going. Today's students have an excellent choice of cars up to 10 years old that they can (because of the depreciation system) buy for the price of a round of drinks.

Sadly, the 190 is subject to these same rules - so if I was a student I would shop carefully for a good one and keep it for years.

All this does not help you, but might go some way to letting you understand that the car you know and love, and which is almost certainly worth more than the market will ever recognize, is where it is!

Good luck with the selling, or the storage.

Alex,

thanks for that, and very well put over...

looking at it now i am thinking its me who has the wrong end of the stick,i thought the merc star was prestige, and therefore commanded a higher value on the resale market..

what made me think this was the lack of 190s now seen on the roads,( well in glasgow anyways )

i think a well thought out advert will do the job!!!

or lets just be bold..................£2k and its anybodys.:p:p

thanks

Golf; this looks a stunning car and just a bit special with the AMG kit, sports seats, low mileage/owners, MB history etc. Personally I would tidy up any of the cosmetic issues, clean it to within an inch of its life and put it up for 3k ono. No takers?, than just mothball it. Far to nice to give away

thanks for that star......

funny 3k is where i dreamed it would be.....funny how things turn out..

2k will be acceptable in its current condition....

can i also add..in its present ownership it has done 27k miles in 12 years, with in excess of 8k being spent on services and minor repairs...

all documents/receipts present...as said before....not many like this left..

thanks

As always, it comes back to something being worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Yours is a rare example, the only drawback being the manual gearbox, that said, if someone has a preference for swapping there own cogs, you would have just the ticket.

Hello Golf

I get frustrated at prices things fetch as well.

But there's one other factor to consider - its likely that someone interested in your 190 will actually want a nice Mercedes, not necessarily a 190, and there is an abundance of quality, well maintained, fabulously specced cars our there ripe for the picking in that up to £3K price.

Would you like a V8, a coupe? an S Class, a presentable CLK?

With £3K the Mercedes car buying world is your oyster. I think the pearl in yours is just a little on the small side, even if it is beautifully formed.

after a few days of frantically searching at various web sites, mags, car adds...i would also agree that the 190 is not in the 3k price bracket..

but it sits very snugly into the 2k bracket ..

an old glaswegian sayin springs to mind,in answer to the SMALL but beautifully formed pearl.....

" why have mince when you can have stake at the house "

" well the answer has to be steak is great, but sometimes a little bit of mince is even better "

for 2k someone will get a decent car.

what has been refreshing is the way the merc guys conduct themselves with the " grown up arguments " had this been some other forum this would have been a nightmare and not a pleasure...

so well done chaps..:p

Alex,

I'm like the trusty old sheep dog, done it all the same way for years successfully...

not needing to be told or advised, possibly not even listening..

but things start to slow down, and im maybe not as fast, and things seem to be going slower...

but i get there in the end.....

reminds me of a joke..

a young bull and an auld bull in the top field looking down at the cows in the lower field..

the young bull all exicted says to the older bull " lets run down there and bash a cow "

the auld bull replies " no lets walk down there and bash all the cows "

thanks

thanks to all for their input..

the car has now been moved on to a brother in the family..

it was either that it was going to go to scrappage scheme, believe it or not because the figure of 2k was imbedded in the f.i.l.brain.

the brother needed a car so it was given to him at a knockdown price £00.00

lucky barsteward..

thanks for the interest...:D

Very interesting thread, having just bought a 190e I agree it's hard to believe what you're getting for your money. My alternative was a Peugeot 205 GTi. And while I would've loved the B roads in that thing, I feel I've got 10x the car for the same, if not less (for a mint example) cash.

Had I been selling, I'd have been greeting. But I've been smiling non-stop since the second I purchased him.

remember that you will have to translate for the english as they will be wondering why you are "greeting" nobody in your thread which to them will look mad when i know you mean "crying"

That's the problem with the scrappage scheme. Some people, like your FIL, then think that every car is "worth" £2k. Clearly they're not - as he himself demonstrated by giving it away for nothing

£ 1200 -was -but if looked after -it will stay at that for the next few years too --how many new (scrappage scheme)cars will hold the same price from now till next year even-I think this is where this government has fooled people yet again !
I.E.-Get yourself into debt pay through the nose on credit for your new car for years to come while it depreciates in value from the day you sign for it --( Great idea in a recession ? )
