Hi everyone

i've noticed that my 190e (1991, 69,000 miles) sometimes stalls when moving from P to R, especially when warm ? When selecting R, the rev counter drops to around 500 ish then comes back, however sometimes it stalls. Any ideas out there?

The only other noticable problem is a slightly unsmooth tickover which can be felt + oil pressure guage/ rev counter movement. The car has just had a head gasket, water pump, thermostat + dist cap, rotor arm, plugs (ngk) and after market leads.
many thanks, Johntom

Hi John - glad to see you got car fixed. Erratic revs, stalls, poor running are usually caused by faulty OVP relay. If your ABS light has been coming sometimes for no apparent reason then I would say OVP relay definately at fault. Do a search for "OVP" and you will see others have had same trouble and location of relay and more info.

Hi
thanks for your reply. If no signs of the abs light could it still be the ovp relay?
thanks

If you have just done the head gasket, the throttle linkage might need readjusting. The arm needs to touch the microswitch when the car is idling. If it does not stall when cold it is probably the idle control valve that is keeping it running, when that switches off the engine is being starved.
I had the same problem after I had done my head gasket.

Good luck.

Jim.

If no ABS light then probably not OVP. Check for what The Jim says and check all air / breather hoses are back on correctly. Try a search for "stalling" 190's for more clues.

John - I posted this for the Jim ages ago and found this info regarding idle:

saw this posted by Pentoman on another 190 thread:

For idle problems look at:

Coolant temperature sensor (4 pin at front of engine)
Fuel shutoff switch (on throttle linkage)
Throttle position sensor (Built into bottom of throttle body, 3 wires)
Idle Control Valve (Right side of engine as you look in, 2 pin plug, a clean sometimes helps but sometimes you've just gotta replace it)
