Good morning, I'm hoping that some of you more experienced people can assist me.

I have a 1993 190e 2.0L Automatic.

The car has been okay as of late, running a little lumpy after a cold start but perfectly fine as soon as the car had warmed up.

Yesterday however, the car was incredibly difficult to start. I smelt fuel so had a look around and saw a puddle of fuel just behind the passenger side front wheel.

Sorry if the description is a bit vague. I haven't got much experience fixing cars but I hope you can help.

Any ideas what to do?

Thanks,
Jack

Some additional information incase required...

When I turn the ignition on, I can hear the fuel pump so hopefully that rules out the pump.

Thankyou for your reply! I will take the wing off and have a look and get back to you.

I had a quick look under the car and the fuel seems to be dripping slowly from a pipe (I will add a photo for you to look at)

Two questions...

1) could these issues be related? The charcoal filter and fuel running down to this pipe?

2) would any of these issues cause the car ti be difficult to start/not start at all?

Thanks,

Jack

I haven't been able to get the wing off yet.

I found the Leak and it is coming from the line marked 74 which goes to the filter. The line doesn't drip when the engine is off but as soon as I turn the ignition and the fuel pump primes, it starts to drip.

The pipe looks corroded so I'm wondering if a small hole has formed.

I will still check to see if I have a charcoal cannister and report back.

Would the leak from the fuel line that runs to the filter cause the vehicle to not start? I tried to start the car once with easy start and it started quickly which led me to think the leak has caused a drop in fuel pressure hence it not starting.

Thanks,
Jack

So this is the hard line that runs the length of the car ,one is feed in and one that returns fuel to the tank ..They are made of white metal, may be aluminum type ..I would look for one in a scrap yard . Or use a rubber braded hose that stands petrol and make a good joint with clips , it would work and get get you back on the road .. you - could - cut the section out and try to get a brass fitting to join it up .This leak could very well be yourr running problem , that is because the system -> must have pressure < - and this builds up in the tank ..

Thankyou for the response!

I've ordered a hose to fit temporarily and have a new fuel line on order from Mercedes but fingers crossed it works.

I need the car back on the road ASAP so hopefully can get it sorted tomorrow.

Hi Jack,

I can't really offer any better advice than what you've already had regarding the repair, just a word of advice to be very careful with petrol around a hot engine or garage tools. It's very very easy to set it all alight! I know from experience...

Thankyou for the response. I'm a very paranoid person so I'll take extra precautions haha

Hi everyone, thankyou all for your help.

Cut out the fuel line that had a leak, connected it with some rubber hosing and clamped it.

Car starts first time now and no more leaks!

Wasn't the most fun job to do during the recent weather but atleast the car us running again
