Hello everyone,

After promising myself a merc for many years I have eventually strted at the cheaper end of the market with a 190e 1.8 auto. It caused me no problems for a while and still runs beautifully once moving but has an annoying problem with the idle speed.

When sitting in traffic in D you can watch the rev counter drop down to 300-400 rpm so you have to pop it in N so the revs will pick up. It also cuts out now and again when trying to pull away again. Once it has cut out it is very troublesome to restart and requires a lot of cranking to get going again.

I have checked a few different threads already but am struggling for an answer to this one. Anyone have any ideas???????????

P.S I have had the idle control valve cleaned and this has not helped. Can these wear out?

The ATF need a change with the filter every 2/3 years can't remember exactly. Check your maintenance record.

If you have a W211, the ATF do not need to be changed until 70K miles, the improvement Merc made.

Will give it a go. So it seems like I have a problem with the transmission dragging rather than the engine idling incorrectly????

Follow all Merc maintenances, you find it in the service book that comes with the car. Most of the works are inspections.

Car is a 1992 model. Looks like I have a few things to check out. Car drives so well once moving so this fault is a little irritating. Would this lead to the car being awkward to restart once it has cut out as well?

Yes it could as the mixture becomes a little upset,, and this is why it stopped in the first place, always start with the pipes because they can become a poor fit of crack, letting the air in
