Please can anyone help?
I own an 1991 automatic 1.8 190e which has developed an annoying problem.
Start the car from cold and she runs fine for the first 5mins and then runs like crap.So runs ok when auto choke is on!
It idles ok but looses power on acceleration
floor it and she will scream her nuts off and have problems changing up.
New plugs,distributor cap,rotor arm,fuel filter fitted-no difference.
Also-it dosnt seem to burn any oil but after driving at a high speed say60/70mph release the accelerator for a period of time eg coming off a slip road,re-apply the accellerator and she will send out a cloud of smoke.
Up untill now she has been as sweet as a nut.
Im baffled!

Just had the same problem with my car.

Symptoms :

Cold start, car runs fine for first 10 mins.

Then loses power.Accelerate hard to overcome hesitation from stop and I see black smoke.

Fuel mileage deteriorated gradually from about 450km (at the low fuel light) to 220km over a period of abt 10 weeks (this time was spent testing/checking every sensor/switch/pump/pot/etc to spec.

Finally, I deduced that it was a faulty fuel distributor.

Swapped the FD out with a used one and the car is now runnning good.

My 3rd topoff of the fuel tank after the FD swap got me 486km at the light with 44litres (11km/litre)!

Amazing coincidence, my car is a 1991 190e 1.8 RHD, probably the same spec as the ones in the UK.

How's your fuel mileage? That would be the dead giveaway although you need to eliminate some of the items from the equation by testing.

Let me know.I'd be happy to share my experience with you.

Fuel distributer is underneath the air filter box its the air intake to its right and the valve cover to its left. You'll see 4 injector pipes poking out of the top of it...
