I have a similar problem on my 230CE. I've been told that it is due to the Hydro-Electric Actuator not working as it should be.
Speaking of which, is this an easy part to replace?

The car is due for a service in the near future so I think I might let that go ahead and then take it from there.

If you do find the source of the problem, it would be good if you could let us know for future reference.

Something that I forgot to mention is that the car occaisionally surges forward while I have kept the my foot steady on the accl. I need to lift my foot of the accl. in order to stop it surging. This usually tends to happen (or is most noticable) when on the motorway driving at a constant speed.
