Hi all,
my wife has just bought a 190E 2L Manual, and all is well with it, except for the amount of free play in the throttle pedal. Without the engine running, the pedal goes down a long way before it starts to do anything, and when you look under the bonnet it seems to be correct. Presumably, this free play should be taken up somehow when the engine is started, but it is not. This makes it very difficult to drive smoothly. Initially I thought it was the cable adjustment but it seemed to be right from looking at it, has anbody any thoughts on this?
Thanks

I had a similar problem with my 500SE (W126)
It looked OK at first but I eventually found a bush that
had all but disappeared.
It cost about 0.65 to fix and made a total difference.
The throttle on my car is all rod linkage so if all you have
is a cable then this isn't going to help but I'd still take
another look. Take off everything that's in the way of getting a clear look.

Thanks Andy, I thought everything looked OK. I will just have to get used to it. It's a manual, which makes things a bit worse as I think an auto would be easier, it's trying to change gear quickly that catches me out!
Very impressed with the build quality and if I get used to I may look at one for me, my old BMW is getting a little tired (268000 miles).
Thanks again

Mine is a bit like that, spraying the throttle linkage under the airfilter with WD40 made the whole thing a bit smoother.

My 1990 190E 1.8 is the same, and it took a little while to get used to. Don't notice it any more. This car has now done 200,000 miles on original engine, gearbox, clutch etc. It just keeps going! 6,000 mile oil changes are the secret to long engine life, plus coolant change every 2-3 years.

Eh! excuse me,I said I did that ages ago, cause' thats the bike coming out in me.
I still change my oil every 3/4000 miles,I know it doesn't need to changed as often as that but I do it anyway, but as you'll know bikes engines are alot more highly "stressed" than one in a "tin box".
But then again you tend to get alot more enjoyment out a bike, and anyone who says "no you dont!",hasn't ridden one, well!,you dont know what your missin',and Matt & Dave (and anyone else) can probably vouch for that, right guys!!

Merc.

It would be a bit difficult for me, i sold my last bike about 6 yrs ago.

I have to agree, iv'e had some very good times, and some crazy ones too, but i gave it all up when a good mate had a terrible accident, i decided that after 20+ years without a hitch, it was time to hang up the leathers.

I suppose it's because of this reason, that i've never missed it, and when i see the amount of traffic around these days, plus all the decnt roads down here are now bypasses, i'm glad i'm in a car.

I still get ****ed off when I see them flyin' past me,Ah some day, some day!.

Hi Stuart,

If this will help put your mind at rest. I think you might have a little more time with your clutch. We changed one on a 190e about 89 model. 170k on the original clutch! The rivets had broken as there was still plenty of meat on the clutch disc itself.

Trouble is a lot of owners are only interested in the short term ie how ever long they have got it. Not in the longevity which good regular maintenance would\will achieve.

Yes Matt, you did read it correctly. I bought the car in April 1996 with 116,000 miles on the clock. It had been leased to an insurance company and therefore came with a full print out of everything that had been done to it (at Merecedes dealership in Salisbury). Apart from the usual servicing, tyres and one back box, the only unexpected replacement on that list was a prop shaft universal joint (I think that's what it's called!).

I has now covered 200,650 miles and drives almost as well as the day I bought it, and then I thought it felt like a new car. It certainly felt far superior to the BMW 3 series it replaced with a mere 87,000 miles on the clock.

Regards

Pat
