i'm thinking of getting another 190, probably a petrol model ... but am wondering, what are the relative merits of E (injection) spec engine as opposed to the carb fed version? is one more economical/powerful/reliable than the other? sorry if this topic has been raised before, and thanks for any pointers

Usually a car with injection runs smoother when cold and is taking less fuel than an carb. engine, but of course there´s exceptions to this also. It depends much on the average condition of the engine/car. Good luck in your hunt for a new car! :)

cheers for that jaques, will bear it in mind. on balance it sounds as if E spec might be better idea ... i presume the option would have cost more when new.

I didn't know you could still buy a car with a carburator. Go with fuel injection. Carburators are to fuel injection like points and a condensor are to electronic ignitions systems.

190 engines

190 Carburettor 105bhp @5,000rpm 190e 122bhp @5,100 190e2.6 6 cylinder 160bhp@?rpm 190e 1.8 litre 109bhp @?rpm injection engine replaces 190 carburettor 91 onward. best power/economy compromise is 2 litre fuel injection. KE JETRONIC AND ELECTRONIC IGNITION is bullet proof if looked after. :D I had 2 190E,s and had zero failures in 200,000miles.

many thanks grober and robby ackerman for the info. i think i've plumped for a 1.8 injection model (auto) ... test drive tomorrow!! ... most of my driving is in town, so not sure if i would benefit from extra horses of the 2.0 litre

190 vs. 190E

I've recently traded my 190 for 190E. Impressions:
Fuel consumption: 190 is better on a hwy, 190E in traffic jams.
190E has perceptibly more power, while 190 runs smoother. The Pierburg 2EE carb is excellent, very simple and reliable, practically no moving parts, mechanical fuel pump, so I'd go for a carb model.

Hi all

I have to agree with Erop, the 190 carburettor in its day. By which I mean a good example which works properly. Although marginally less power in reals terms. The fuel consumption was loads better. We use to look after a 190 carburettor. Customer use to live in Bidford. So I picked it up and droped it back to and from B'ham so it was a good run. It was very noticable how much less fuel it used. These days though its finding one with the carb in good condition. A very good compromise is the 190e 1.8. The last of the 201's and very good on fuel. A little sluggish. But Heyyyy who needs to be first of the lights.

this was pretty much what i figured. i looked at one 190, carb and motor seemed good and smooth but i was a little worried other things ... anyway long story short i ended up getting a 1992(J) 190E 1.8 Auto just yesterday. the nice man even took my battered old 190D in p/ex, sad to see her go too. the 1.8 is sluggish it's true - but by far the majority of my driving is in town, so i'm not noticing too much. one thing i *have* noticed, though, is how soon the 'box changes up the gears - i guess this must be for the sake of economy. have filled up with gas today and set the odo ...
