I'm looking to add a workhorse merc to my fleet. I already have an estate car in the family so the natural 124 E-Class option isn't there, so I was thinking of a smaller saloon. Choices I've got at a glance are the 190e or the C-Class. My budget is 5k ish but quite like the idea of getting an older 190e and pocketing the difference - I'll be putting 25k on the clock in a year so figured a good history 90-120k car and diesel because of the fuel economy required!

Anyone any advice ? There seem to be a few good 190's with 2.0 petrol anyone know what the fuel economy is on this or the diesels ?

Thanks for the guidance....

People who buy C-Classes are happy with them if they have come from another brand. I know very few people who have went from a W201 or W124 into a C-Class and have been happy with it.

Petrols are a bit thirsty due to the older engine design and the weight and the diesels are not sports cars. 2.5's are OK but only have 94bhp. 2.0D is only about 75bhp.
If speed isn't a concern then get a 190D 2.5 and look after it, don't get a C220D, but what about the W124 saloon (E250D/E300D)? For £5K you will get a nice facelift 300D with the later multivalve engine

The posts in this forum answers it for it?s self, there is a lot more problems with the w202 model than with the w201 model the only thing is that the 190 model looks dated now but personally I would rather have a reliable car than a c class with problems the alarm system is a joke on the c class. And for the w203 model these cars seem to be full of faults just have a read through the posts and you will see for yourself. So if you have a 190 take care of it because these cars will still be running when the c class is long forgotten.

I agree with the W124 300D option. Excellent cars and handle really well for their size and also a doddle to park.

So in summary - I should avoid the C-Class and head for the W124 Saloon - Sounds like a reasonable suggestion. I need to understand the fuel economy on the 250 and 300 and then I'm Autotrader bound....

Any assistance here would be good.

You come on with a post for either a C class or a 190 so why the F**k are you talking about a w124 you should rephrase you post for information about a c class v 124 or 190 v 124, or do you not know what you want or are you feeling lonely

It was a bit of a precocious post so sorry if I upset the "numb" guy, but so what - It helped shape things a bit - thats the idea of a forum.

I've got a C250 TD with almost 200,00 miles on her.

I did consider a 2.5D 190 with all the options and only 23k miles but what put me off was 94 bhp to pull it's weight and not being very economical with it.

What impresses me about mine was how taut the whole car felt and reviewing it's history it had suffered no major problems, just regular servicing required.

Performancewise the 150 bhp provides more than adquate poke and I get about 40mpg from an automatic.
