My 220s is running terrible. Its the 6cylinder with 2 carbs. It has a hard time starting and when I get it running it does not accelerate smooth when I give it gas and backfires alot. I pulled the wire off my coil and looked down in the coil and it is rusty down there. Can this do this? I have put new plugs too. Any ideas please email at porshapower@webtv.net ThankYOU:)Nelson[/i]

Hi

With out looking at the vehicle. But the back firing is usually caused by the carburettors. The bodies warp & draw in excess air causing week mixture & the back firing. The carb bodies need a litte TLC. But you will need to take to a specialist who has the expertise on these old cars

I used have a four cylinder Honda motorbike with a four carb set up. We used a bank of four vacuum gauges to balance the carbs, tapped into the intake manifolds. We also had to adjust the four cable operated slides, mixture, chocke and idle settings so that they all were identical. Manifold gaskets are absolutely critical, must be in good condition. Not very difficult but needed regular doing by someone whop knew what they were at. When they were off we got exactly what you describe.

If you have a problem you might try finding someone who was used to early Honda and Kawasaki fours, they should have the gear and the expertise. These guys are always very helpful and willing to assist.

Good luck with it, my dad had one of those early ones, a 220SE so he didnt have that particular problem. They were nice.

220 Running Badly

Check for leaking air (vacuum leak): warped/cracked intake manifold; gasket(s); worn throttle shaft(s); misc. vacuum lines. Backfiring indicates mixture too lean. Carb could be partially stopped up.
