If I'm in the market for a 1972 or earlier SL, where's the best place for a good one in reasonable nick? Also, will there be much to be done by self, as I'm no mechanic, I'm merely an enthusiast. It will be for occasional use really. And what kind of price should I be looking at?

I hope this is of use. Asia, and in particular Hong Kong, is a huge source of MB Classics. A few years back the Classic car market dropped here and values whent down with it. Many were sold to Australia. Hong Kong being a left hand drive country, they are suitable for the UK. Oppps are you in the UK, I did not look at your location on your post. Anyway the internet is a powerful tool and Asia is a great source of classic cars.
Oh, I see you are in lancashire, im from yorkshire.

Definately 1972 or prior to. Zero road tax and classic car insurance probably.
