This is the second of my three big issues.

The back axel whines like an old ford van through initial acceleration.

Is this simply bearings or something more synister brewing with the gearing?

This could be tied into my third and final issue, before the car ends up like new!

There is play through the drive system that cause jolting and knocking when moving slowly in stop start traffic.

Occurs when decellerating.

Is this likely to be the back axel or auto box?

Prop shaft looks ok, cannot get any movement there.

As Malcolm says, it really is a specialist job as it's not just a case of replacing the bearings, but you will need to make sure that the pinion is set at the correct depth in relation to the crownwheel and with the right amount of preload on the new bearings.

Also I would recommend replacing bearings no 47 in the drawing and then you will have to fit the correct size spacer so that you have the right amount of backlash. ;);)
